About 10 years ago now, I woke up in a boogie Rehab facility–I’d already lost my second 8 figure business. I’d lost my son. I’d lost hope. I’d lost the will to live, and I was selling cars to get by.
My boss at the time was pretty shrewd, and a really nice guy.
He found out (I guess I wasn’t as clever as I thought) that under the mask I wore–behind the record-breaking numbers I was putting up–that I was a complete fucking mess.
Broken inside, shattered, depressed, drinking and drugging EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.
To tell you the truth, man, I wanted to die–I was on a mission to die, but even the devil shunned me at the gates.
My boss, well, he wouldn’t let me die, so he told me I had to get clean if I wanted to keep working for him–he said he’d even pay for my treatment.
So, about 10 years ago, I woke up in a rehab center–the sunlight was creeping through the window–a fat guy was lying in the bed next to mine, scratching his ass.
On the other side of me, an orderly busied herself with the day’s chores, mindless and numb.
And I, occupying the space between them, curled up in a ball, tears streaming down my face, sweat pouring out of my skin…
In that moment, I just wanted to see my son.
And if I hadn’t been bound to the bed–judged a ‘safety risk’–I’d have smashed through everything and everyone that stood between me and my boy.
But I could do nothing except lay there helpless, and think.
And think I did.
I thought back to the night before–the night I was admitted, blazing with anger, aflame with the desire to burn my newfound captivity to the ground, toppling tables, overturning medical carts, threatening staff, screaming at the top of my lungs until my voice was hoarse, every drug under the sun coursing through my blood.
That night, I did something I’d never done before–something that would change the course of my life forever.
When I finally settled down from my tantrum (now you see why I was bound to the bed), I was desperate for a shower.
They cast me naked into the shared bathroom–relieved to be rid of me for a moment–where there were three sinks to wash myself in before the showers freed up.
Standing at the left-most sink was a fellow with orange streaks in his hair–I didn’t much like the look of him.
Standing at the right-most sink was the fat guy–the same one with the scabies.
I couldn’t stomach the thought of looking at either of them.
So when I approached the sink, I had no choice but to look straight ahead.
I had no choice but to look directly into the mirror–directly into my soul–and bear witness to the piece of shit I’d become.
My veins were bulging. My eyes were watering. My face was perspiring, beat red.
I heard a voice in my head–it seemed to come from on high–a divine message in the middle of the madness.
It said…
“Mark, STOP. FUCKING. LYING.”
Now, brother, I wish I could tell you that was the moment everything changed for me, but that would be a lie.
When I got out of rehab, on July 3, 2014–28 days after I’d been admitted–I called my ex-wife from a pay-phone, to see if she’d let me see my son.
She said I couldn’t see him today, because they were in Chicago.
So I called my friend, desperate for some company, and he told me I should come down to Sunset Pool.
He said there were some pre-July 4 celebrations going on–and what did I know?
My wife and my son were there, at Sunset Pool, far away from Chicago.
She lied to me.
So where did I go next?
Straight to the fucking bar–back down into my hole of pathetic, self-pitying misery.
But still, something HAD changed in me, because of that day in rehab, when I faced my reflection and heard the voice whisper…
Stop. Fucking. Lying.
And when I awoke from what would be my final bender–my final dance with the devil–and set myself the task of fixing my life and righting my wrongs, those three words stuck with me, like granny’s wallpaper that just won’t peel off no matter how hard you try.
They became the foundation of my life’s work.
They are the foundation of what it means to be a COMEBACK and every COMEBACK swears by them and honors them.
They constitute our creed, and the first step toward liberation.

Alcohol was never the problem. My ex-wife was never the problem. My fucked up childhood was never the problem.
I was the problem–me, and me alone.
